At the Crossroads with Wisdom

Father’s Day is complicated.

For some, it’s a warm call home. For others, it’s grief wrapped in memory. Some will reach for

the phone today. Others will reach for a candle. Some are dads in every sense of the

word—biological, adoptive, queer, chosen family. And some of us are still learning how to father

ourselves.

So on this emotionally layered day, we turn not to answers, but to Wisdom—the voice of God

who cries out, not from the temple or the throne, but from the crossroads.

Yes, that’s in the Bible.

 Wisdom at the Crossroads: Proverbs

Proverbs 8 introduces us to Lady Wisdom—or Hokmah in Hebrew, Sophia in Greek. She is no

passive bystander. She’s at the gates of the city, at the intersections of life, calling out for

anyone who will listen.

“Doesn’t Wisdom cry out and Understanding shout?

At the crossroads, she takes her stand.” (Proverbs 8:1-2, CEB)

If you’ve ever stood at a spiritual or emotional intersection—between belief and doubt, between

identity and rejection, between who you are and who you were told to be—then you already

know what the crossroads feel like.

Wisdom is there.

She doesn't bring a checklist. She doesn’t demand perfection.

She says:

"Pause. Breathe. What do you know in your bones to be true?"

 Reflection Question:

When have you stood at a crossroads in your life?

What wisdom came to you—through a person, a whisper, or an experience—that helped

you choose your path?

Wisdom Was There from the Beginning

Proverbs tells us that Wisdom has been around since before the world began.

“I was beside [God] as a master worker; I was having fun, smiling before him all the

time…” (Proverbs 8:30, CEB)

Not judging.

Not managing.

Frolicking.

Yes, frolicking. The divine begins in delight.

So here’s a spiritual question worth asking today:

When’s the last time you let yourself delight in the world?

Because sometimes holiness looks like joy.

Sometimes wisdom arrives as laughter.

Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is dance, even when the world says “sit down.”

 Mini Exercise:

Name one thing that brings you joy today. Say it aloud. Whisper it. Claim it.

That’s Wisdom too.

If You’ve Never Heard Her Voice

And still—some might say, “I’ve never heard God speak through Wisdom.”

Maybe you were told that God only speaks through straight white men with theology degrees.

Maybe no one ever called you wise.

Maybe you’ve only heard God through guilt.

Let me ask you:

● Have you ever walked away from something toxic and never looked back?

● Have you loved someone even when it broke your heart?

● Have you taken a leap with no map—just a gut feeling?

That’s Wisdom.

She doesn't always shout. Sometimes she whispers:

“You are still worthy.

Keep going.”

 Discussion Question:

What voice has guided you in your hardest moments?

What reminded you who you were when the world tried to unmake you?

A Queer Take on Divine Fatherhood

Let’s talk about Father’s Day.

The word “Father” carries weight.

For some, it's a warm embrace. For others, a wound. For many, it’s confusing.

But what if the Divine Father isn’t a 1950s disciplinarian in the clouds?

What if God looks more like Wisdom—joyful, creative, strong, tender, even queer?

The image of Wisdom dancing beside God makes me wonder:

Maybe the Father we’re meant to celebrate today is the one who says:

“You were beloved before you did anything to earn it.

You belong because you exist.”

Maybe divine fathering is less about control and more about co-creating joy.

✨ A Ritual for the Crossroads

No materials needed—just your breath.

● Take a breath and name someone who has fathered you in love or wisdom. Whispe

their name in gratitude.

● Now remember a moment when Wisdom showed up in your life—when you were at

crossroads, and something deep inside said, “Go.”

That’s the altar we build today. Not with stone or paper, but with memory.

With breath. With presence. With love.

 A Father’s Day Benediction

If you’ve lost your dad…

If your child feels far away…

If you never got the love you deserved…

If you’re trying to father yourself or others and feel like you’re failing…

Hear this:

You are still beloved.

You are still dancing.

You still matter to this world.

May you trust Wisdom’s voice.

May you find the courage to frolic again.

May you father the tender places in yourself and others with fierce, liberating love.

Final Question to Carry With You:

What if Wisdom is still speaking through your life?

And what would it mean to start trusting her again—right here, at the crossroads?
